ChatGPT Traffic Decline Continues for Third Consecutive Month, But Signs of Reversal Emerge in Latest Data Analysis
The ChatGPT website experienced a decline in monthly website visits for the third consecutive month in August, with worldwide desktop and mobile visits decreasing by 3.2 percent to 1.43 billion. This decline follows approximately 10 percent drops in website visits during the previous two months. The average time visitors spent on the website has also been decreasing since March, falling from 8.7 minutes on site to 7 minutes in August. However, the number of worldwide unique visitors in August increased slightly to 180.5 million users compared to 180 million.
One factor contributing to the decline in usage during the summer months may be a decrease in younger users, possibly due to school breaks. With schools returning to session in September, it's possible that ChatGPT's traffic and usage may see a rebound, especially as students seek homework help. In August, US ChatGPT traffic rose slightly, coinciding with American schools being back in session.
ChatGPT saw rapid adoption upon its launch in November and reached 100 million monthly active users by January. However, the growth rate has since slowed, and competition in the AI chatbot space has increased with the launch of new competitors like Google's Bard chatbot.
OpenAI also released the ChatGPT app on the iOS platform in May, which may have affected website traffic as users migrated to the app. Additionally, ChatGPT offers a premium subscription for $20 per month, which could impact website usage.
While website traffic may have experienced a decline, OpenAI generates revenue by selling access to its AI models to developers and enterprises, both directly and through its partnership with Microsoft, which made a significant investment in the company.
